Providence v.s. MercyAugust 27, 2011 at MercyVarsity Providence 3 - Mercy 0
The Providence girls
soccer team ventured to Kentucky to play one of the top teams in the
Louisville area, the Mercy Jaguars on Sat. The past 2 seasons saw the
home team coming away with the victory each time in some very hard
fought contests. This match was no different in the effort category but
saw the PHS girls come away with a road victory that helped to
legitimize its undefeated 6-0 season thus far. The opening 20 minutes
gave no hint of who the eventual winner would be. In fact, Mercy may
have held an edge in the early going with its hardnosed athletic
attacking style.
PHS held its ground and opened the scoring in the 24th minute off a corner kick with an ensuing scramble and a punch shot in the box from midfielder, Erin Duncan. At the 36 minute mark, outside-mid Lauren Holland, made a strong run down the right side and lofted a perfectely placed shot over the fingers of the goalie. Not resting on a dangerous 2-0 halftime lead, PHS came out and clamped down on the Mercy counter-attack with its "BRICK FORCE," Leah Mattingly, Kelsey Rogers, Erin Wallace, and MaryAshley Betz. PHS scored its last goal at the 25 minute mark of the second half with a nice through ball from Erin Duncan to Casey Marlin in the box who was able to trap, cut and finish from 6 yards out to finish the scoring at 3-0.. Mercy never gave up the fight but still could not score as PHS registered another shutout with its vaulted defense. PHS outshot Mercy 16-3. Next up for the Pioneers with be North Harrison on Tuesday, August 30th and Christian Acadamy of Louisville on Thursday, Sept 1st. Story submitted by Jerry Duncan |
