Varsity

The Providence Varsity Boys played Jennings Co, Tuesday 8/31/2010 in a classic at the rovidence soccer field.  PHS got off to a quick start in the fourth minute when Senior Josh Maled slid the ball across the front of the goal and midfielder Pierce Crawley one touched the ball into the left side of the goal from 15 yards out.  Jennings Co. responded 5 minutes later with a goal off of a nice give and go that sprung the Panther forward behind the PHS defense to face the Pioneer keeper one on one.  The Providence offense generated numerous scoring opportunities throughout the first half but PHS failed to finish them off.  The half time score was 1-1 with PHS taking 10 shots and giving up 2.

The second half got off to a good start when Senior Wade Brown took a ball played to him from Senior Weston Schrank and while moving from right to left across the face of the goal hit the ball from 20 yards out left footed and placed the ball into the right side of the goal.  Jennings Co. quickly responded 6 minutes later when their forward (#5) drove down the right side of the field and fought off the PHS defender to place the ball past the Providence keeper.  The Panthers took a 3-2 lead with 18 minutes left when the ball was crossed in from the right hand side and headed home by the tightly marked Jennings Co. forward (#5).  This time PHS responded with a goal.  With 6:37 left in the game midfielder Andrew Wimp was taken down in the box.  After much indecision by the officiating crew a PK was awarded to Providence.  Pierce Crawley took and made the PK.

The fired up Pioneers kept the pressure on Jennings Co. and with 20 seconds remaining in the game Senior Trent Brown ran onto a nice pass down the right side from Senior Ben Orem.  Trent  took the ball to the end line and slid the ball across the goal to midfielder Pierce Crawley who again slotted the ball into the left side of the goal for his third goal of the night and to put PHS ahead 3-2.  The PHS crowd went nuts and a major celebration ensued.  With 20 seconds left in the game #5 from Jennings Co. took the kickoff and shot the ball shot from the center midfield mark and placed the ball perfectly into upper left hand corner of the goal to tie the game 4-4.  The PHS crowd was shocked and the Jennings Co. crowd went nuts over a miraculous shot.  After a hard fought game that PHS controlled (outshooting their opponent 15 – 6) the final score in this thriller was 4-4.  Providence’s record goes to 1-2-1 and their next opponent is Heritage Christian in the first round of the Hoosier Cup.
