Providence at Columbus District 5 Invitational 2009

Oldenburg Academy

The Providence girls soccer team played in the Columbus North soccer tournament Saturday along with 13 other teams from around the state of Indiana. PHS played Oldenburg Academy in the morning match. The teams toyed with one another for the first 15 minutes before PHS center-mid, Erin Duncan, blasted a shot from around the 18 yard marker.

Katelyn Koopman and Kasey Wallace also scored in the first half to lead PHS to a 3 to 0 halftime score. 5 minutes into the 2nd half, Kasey Wallace fed a through ball to Casey Marlin who scored to make it a 4 to 0 margin. Providence went to their bench and played every available player before giving up a direct kick goal to Oldenburg with 5 minutes remaining in the game. PHS outshot their opponent 17 to 3 in on-goal shots and also led 5 to 0 in corner shots attempted.

South Dearborn

In the 2nd game PHS faced South Dearborn, the ONLY team to beat them in the regular season last year. PHS won their sectional last year while South Dearborn won their regional. The girls from PHS had waited one year this last year's early season Columbus North tournament to avenge a last second lost to South Dearborn.

Everyone expected quite a war on the field, but only one team came ready to battle, the Providence Pioneers! It took only 3 minutes for Kasey Wallace to feed a ball into Casey Marlin in the box for an early score. From there the rout was on. PHS pushed to a 5 to 0 halftime score with 2 more scores from Casey Marlin and scores from Erin Duncan and Kasey Wallace.

The 2nd half saw 3 more PHS scores, one each from Casey Marlin (4 for the game), Leah Mattingly and Sarah Posante. Late in the game South Dearborn managed their only score on a direct kick resulting from a foul in the box. PHS outshot their opponent 14 to 3. They have started their season 4 and 0 and play their next game this coming Tuesday evening at home (6pm) against Forest Park.
